Navigating the literary marketplace can be daunting for new and emerging writers. This unique package will give you an experience of the industry that is normally reserved for writers represented by an agent or already signed by a publisher. This is the ideal professional development program for aspiring writers.

Individual 25-minute consultations on Saturday, 27 February 2021. Consultations times will be AEDT.

In this rare opportunity you will meet with one of Australia’s leading publishers, who will provide feedback in person on the state of your manuscript. During this 25-minute session, the publisher will be able to answer your queries about the viability of the work in progress and where it could potentially land in the market.

In addition, on completion of this meeting, you will receive a professional copy-edit on your submitted work from a Senior Editor, which will not only help improve your copy but give you an insight into how the editorial process works for books heading to market.

Please note Annette is unable to give feedback on sci-fi, children’s books or poetry.

Annette Barlow has worked in the publishing industry for over 30 years, in bookshops, in sales, in editorial and for over 20 years as a publisher. Her list comprises fiction titles, including the twice Miles Franklin-winner Alex Miller and many successful writers of commercial fiction such as Kate Morton, Fleur MacDonald, Minette Walters and Tony Jones….

Course outline

Your booking includes:

• A 25 minute one-on-one meeting with Annette Barlow, who will have read your work before the meeting
• Copy edit on a 3000-word sample of your manuscript by a Senior Editor
• A complimentary copy of an A&U publication.

How to Book

Once you make your booking we will contact you to make a specific time for your meeting and send you details on how to submit your writing sample and other information.

You will need to submit 20-pages or two chapters of your manuscript (whichever is the shorter), preferably continuous and from the beginning of your manuscript. This should be typed, 12 point and double spaced. Please include in the same document a brief synopsis or dot-point breakdown of your story (no more than a page) including the genre, a two-line ‘elevator pitch’, a brief biography, intended readership and examples of competing and complementary titles.

 

Please carefully consider what you send us as we will not accept a different or updated writing sample at a later date. The first 3000 words of your submission will be sent to the Senior Editor for the copy-editing element of this program.
