Faber Academy was established by iconic London publishing house Faber & Faber to provide high quality, practical creative writing courses that draw participants into the very centre of the book publishing world.

Since 2010, Australia’s leading independent publisher Allen & Unwin has partnered with Faber and Faber to present the Faber Writing Academy. Our writing courses are devised and run by leading figures in contemporary publishing, including award-winning authors and publishers and literary agents working at the highest level in the industry.

Key personnel

Sam Twyford-Moore, Faber Writing Academy Manager
Sam has a decade of experience in the creative arts community, with a particular focus on the literary sector and digital innovation.

He has served as the Director and CEO of the Emerging Writers’ Festival and founded The Rereaders, a literary and cultural podcast.

Ellen O’Brien, Editor-in-Residence
Ellen O’Brien is a Garigal/Walkeloa writer living on Gadigal land. Ellen is the 2022 Program Officer for The Writing Zone and a junior editor at the Sydney Review of Books. She has had prose and poetry published in Sydney Review of Books, Meanjin, OverlandRabbitCordite and un Magazine and was previously a facilitator for the Feminist Killjoys Reading Group.

Gillian May, Communications Manager
Gillian has had a long career in publishing and bookselling, including managing a Berkelouw Books store where she developed a highly regarded events program and the Pittwater Short Story Award.

Kimberley Carter, Co-ordinator
Kimberley graduated from Macquarie University with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Creative Writing. She had a blast as the Project Manager for issue 18 of The Quarry Journal and has previously enjoyed volunteering for the Newcastle Writers Festival. When she is not reading, writing, or editing, she enjoys spending time outdoors and discovering new music or TV shows to binge.
