The Opening Chapter: Starting Fiction Strong

This is where you start. Have you struggled to get the first words down in a project? During this 8-week course you will be part of a supportive learning environment designed to get you started on your dream work of fiction and to finish the opening chapter of your work in progress. Your tutor will work with you to begin a project plan to get you to keep working once the first chapter is done.

This is where you start. Have you struggled to get the first words down in a project? During this 8-week course you will be part of a supportive learning environment designed to get you started on your dream work of fiction and to finish the opening chapter of your work in progress. Your tutor will work with you to begin a project plan to get you to keep working once the first chapter is done.

The classes are lively and inclusive, and the atmosphere is one of support, encouragement, and respect for your work. We will be discussing technical matters of course, but we’ll also be talking about process and motivation.

You can expect:

  • 8 weeks of learning and support to get you writing
  • Flexibility and rigour in a specially designed learning environment

Take your work to the next level – in just a few weeks, go from an aspiring scribbler to a disciplined writer.

By the end of the course you will have:

  • Gained an understanding of all the important elements and techniques of storytelling;
  • Bolstered your abilities and interest in writing fiction in a friendly environment;
  •  Received constructive and rigorous feedback on your writing, so that you can measure your improvement.-

This course is a useful foundation for those who wish to take the longer, more intensive Faber Writing Academy Writing a Novel course in 2021.

At the end of the course, you will, have the option to have part of your opening chapter edited by a Senior Editor at Allen & Unwin.

Kristina Olsson

Kristina Olsson is an award-winning writer of fiction, non-fiction and journalism. Her 2013 memoir, Boy, Lost, garnered multiple national awards. Her most recent  novel, Shell, is set in Sydney against the backdrop of the building of Sydney Opera House and Australia’s entry into the Vietnam War. It launched the legendary Scribner Australia literary imprint and was shortlisted…
