Brooke Robinson introduces Submitting Your Novel

We asked Brooke Robinson how she’s planning to help novelists hone their novel submissions in her new Faber course.

FWA: Ideally, what writing experience do the students doing your course need to have?

BR: Students will be working on their first novel, ideally they’ll have completed at least a full first draft but this is not essential. As long as students have thoroughly planned and spent time thinking about the book they’re writing, and the career they’d like to have, the course will still have plenty of value.

FWA: How do you ensure a focus on students’ works-in-progress?

BR: Ideally, students will be currently editing their manuscripts-in-progress and so all of the learnings from the course can be directly and immediately applied to what they’re working on. That said, it’s equally useful for the work which students produce on the course to be ‘practice’ documents which they can draw upon in the years ahead.

FWA: What is the main thing you hope students will have achieved by the end of your course?

BR: I hope students will be able to confidently speak about their manuscript and clearly articulate what makes it special, preparing them to sell their book to both publishers and readers.
