Editor-in-Residence – Faber Writing Academy at Allen & Unwin

Allen & Unwin are Australian owned and operated and international in our thinking, with offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and London, a global network of connected partners, and a local list that is unrivalled in scope and quality.

Faber Writing Academy at Allen & Unwin hosts an exciting annual program of writing courses and editorial services designed by Australia’s leading writing and publishing professionals. Writing courses are devised and run by leading figures in contemporary publishing, including award-winning authors and publishers and literary agents working at the highest level in the industry.

Faber Writing Academy at Allen & Unwin is seeking a talented, innovative editor to join our dynamic team. As our Editor-in-Residence – a newly developed role – you will work closely with our students to edit their work at the highest professional standard, teaching them the ins and outs of being edited at a leading publishing company. You will then oversee the production of the biannual Faber Writing Anthology, a showcase of students’ work sent to publishers and literary agents across Australia and the United Kingdom.

If successful, you will be:

  • Managing and overseeing the production of the biannual Faber Writing Anthology
  • Copy-editing student work submitted as part of select courses
  • Working with the Faber Writing Academy Manager to design and deliver the Academy’s suite of editorial services, including manuscript assessment and mentorship programs
  • Appearing as a guest speaker in select Faber Writing Academy courses
  • Engaging a network of freelance editors to assist with copy-editing work as required
  • Proofreading and editing Faber Writing Academy course materials and marketing copy as requested

The successful candidate will be someone who can work within a small, dynamic team to deliver editorial services to the highest standard and help build the Faber Writing Academy’s unique editorial programs. The role will also require someone who is keen to develop and nurture the voices of emerging writers.

In-house or freelance editorial experience is essential. As this is a newly created position within the company, the role will initially be offered as a freelance or casual position (between 8 and 16 hours per week), with a view to move to permanent part time after the first 6 months with salary commensurate with experience.

To apply, email your CV and a brief cover letter outlining your skills and experience relevant to the role.
