Kickstart Your Speculative Fiction Project with J.S Breukelaar is an online writing course presented by Faber Writing Academy.

Have you got a great idea for a speculative fiction project—whether that’s a collection of short stories, a novel for adults or young adults, or a film or TV treatment—but you’re struggling to get started? During this 12-week introductory course, you will be part of a close-knit, supportive learning environment designed to get you started on your dream work of speculative fiction, whether that be fantasy, science fiction, horror, romantasy, magic realism, alternative history or anything and everything in between.

What makes for effective world-building? How do you craft characters that can move in these worlds? How do you craft an entirely fictional setting in a way that will convince readers that it is lived-in and real? Rich with successful texts from the canon, and jam-packed full of writing prompts, provocations and exercises, this course will get you reading widely and writing up a storm in a safe and supportive environment of no more than 12 participants.

Course outline

Session 1: Wednesday 18 February 
Introduction: Overview of genre, conventions, influences and approaches. Where do you fit in? Novels or short stories? Students will get an opportunity to discuss stumbling blocks in their practice or ideas, and set their intentions for the next eight weeks.

Session 2: Wednesday 25 February
With guest author J. S. Breukelaar
Finding your voice. Experiments in free writing, tense, & point of view as it applies to your chosen genre.

Session 3: Wednesday 4 March
Writing processes.
Planning vs pantsing, the pros and cons of both. We’ll discuss some of the big-name authors working in speculative fiction today and how you can rethink your practice by learning from them.

Session 4: Wednesday 11 March
World-building.
How do you create worlds at the intersection of place and time, at the crossroads of superstition and science, and at the juncture of fantasy and reality? When to stop researching and start writing!

Session 5: Wednesday 18 March
Detail.
On becoming a camera and on imagining the impossible: how concrete detail can empower your imaginative writing.

Session 6: Wednesday 25 March
Genre.
What kind of project could this be? Experimenting in various forms—discussions of trilogies, duologies, novellas, and short stories. Reader expectations, industry considerations, and pushing at the boundaries of genre, of language, and structure to make your novel stand out.

Session 7: Wednesday 1 April
Crafting characters.
 Character is everything in Spec. Fic. And we mean everything.  We will explore how to bring your great ideas to life and manage the relationships between your human characters and others, giving your storytelling the power to move your readers and enhance their ability to imagine worlds within worlds.

COURSE BREAK

Session 8: Wednesday 22 April
Dialogue.
Look who’s talking. Students will learn techniques and strategies to crack the dialogue code and consider how to manage the Tower of Babel that is dialogue in speculative fiction.

Session 9: Wednesday 29 April
Plotting. All systems must go – especially the magical ones. Dramatic tension, anyone? We will consider why it’s lacking in some spec fic and how to fix your own loose beginnings, flabby middles, and weak endings.

Session 10: Wednesday 6 May
Narrative time. Flashbacks, flashforwards, time shifts and tense. Speculative fiction traverses great space and time—how to make the right choices for the story you’re trying to tell.

Session 11: Wednesday 13 May
The next draft. Outlining and organisation hacks. We will discuss self-editing and how to practice good habits to avoid having to do that extra draft.

Session 12: Wednesday 20 May
Problem-solving. Quick fixes, troubleshooting and when to let go. We will also consider next steps, professionally, and take a look at markets, including flash fiction, poetry, comics, graphics, and animation. How to establish yourself as a professional writer without sacrificing your artistic goals.
