On Demand Editing

The Faber Writing Academy offers a boutique copy-editing service for writers who feel their writing is ready to receive a full copy-edit. We offer the opportunity to have a short form work edited of up to 3,000 words, or you can submit your full manuscript of up to 60,000 words and receive a copy-edit from our Editor-in-Residence or one of our fantastic freelance editors.

Flexible dates

Short form: $485 / $412.25 (alumni)
Full manuscript: $4000 / $3400 (alumni)

This is your opportunity to have your writing copy-edited by a professional editor at Allen & Unwin, Australia’s leading independent publisher.

As part of this program, you will meet with our Editor-in-Residence for a briefing session focusing on what to expect from a copy-edit, how best to reply to changes and how best to navigate track changes.

Once you have submitted your writing, you will receive one round of copy-edits and feedback on your manuscript before meeting with your editor to discuss their changes to the text. You will then receive a polished final copy of your manuscript, with all changes taken in.

Through this process, you will learn about the practice of copy-editing at a professional publishing house, and the standard of clear and concise writing required in published work. Your work will be thoroughly checked for spelling and grammatical errors.

This service is appropriate for works of fiction or non-fiction. For fiction, you may receive commentary on characters, setting or plot, to ensure consistency throughout your work. For nonfiction works – including memoir, reportage, biography, essay, and life writing – you may want to focus on consistency of voice and discuss approaches to fact-checking.

This is the perfect opportunity to make sure your work is at its best before hitting send to someone you are looking to impress.

How to Apply

Use our online portal to submit your application for this service. We will ask you to choose whether you are applying for a short form copy-edit or a full manuscript edit. In either case, we will ask you to provide a sample of your writing and have you answer a couple of quick questions, so that we know that your piece is ready for copy-editing. Once this is confirmed, our Editor-in-Residence will send you an acceptance email along with additional information, and you will be asked to submit your full manuscript. You can submit your application by visiting this link.

If your manuscript is over 60,000 words, and you would like to have the whole manuscript copy-edited, please be in contact with us to organise a quote.
