Submissions sought for writing opportunity – your favourite debut

Debuts are in the news. Making a great start is important, whether it be to a novel or a whole writing career.

Writing your first novel is daunting, but it can be done well, even magnificently.

Just ask Douglas Stuart who won last year’s Man-Booker with his debut novel Shuggie Bain, or our Writing a Novel tutor Emily Bitto who won the 2015 Stella Prize with her debut The Strays. Pip Smith’s debut novel Half Wild distinguished her as the SMH Best Young Australian Novelist in 2018. Now she is teaching our new course Kickstart Your Novel: The Opening Chapter and Beyond.

With the recent shortlisting of two debut novels for the 2021 Miles Franklin Award, we are certainly living in an age where being a first-time novelist is no barrier to recognition, even awards and accolades.

We want to know about the debut novels, Australian or international, that have made the greatest impact on you.

We are looking for five writers, to deliver 200 words on their favourite debut fiction. We offer a fee of $ 200 and publication on our NEWS page and in our Newsletter.

Pitches are now closed.
