Course fee: $295 / $250 alumni

A one-day course offering aspiring and emerging writers the opportunity to discover what really goes on inside a publishing house, how experienced publishers make their decisions and how to improve the chances of your manuscript being considered for publication.

The program will include sessions on sure-fire proposals, editing your first page, opening chapters, how to write a great covering letter and some of the reasons a manuscript may be rejected. You will be lead by a publisher with decades of industry experience at the highest level in Australia.

The day will include group sessions along with individual feedback – for this you are required to send in the first two pages of your manuscript at least two weeks ahead of the course date (see ‘How to Apply’ below).

The course is appropriate for writers at all levels.

The course includes:
• A full day of intensive tuition from 10am to 4pm
• Lunch and regular tea and coffee breaks.
• A complimentary copy of an A&U publication.
• On completion of the course, alumni discounts on future Faber Writing Academy courses and books from the Allen & Unwin website.

All our class sizes are strictly limited. Book soon to avoid disappointment.

The Secret Life of Getting Published is targeted at students who have manuscripts written for the adult market; either fiction or nonfiction. If your manuscript is for young adults, children or is a picture book, Faber Writing Academy also runs Getting Published as a Writer for Children/a>. Please e-mail faberwritingacademy@allenandunwin.com for further details.

Sue has been a publisher of fiction, non-fiction and illustrated books. She retired at the end of 2016 but continues to do some consulting work with Allen & Unwin. She has taught Faber Writing Academy’s The Secret Life of Getting Published course for the last eight years.
