Fiction or Non-fiction: The many ways to tell a story

First there is the story, or idea for a story, whether imagined or from real life. Then there is the critical question—what is the best way to tell it? As fiction or non-fiction? Novel or memoir, short story or feature? As a writer who has published extensively in these varied genres, Arnold Zable will take you through the processes by which to arrive at this decision.

The borderline between fiction and non-fiction is not as distinct as some would have it. There are techniques that can be applied to both, and techniques they share in common. There are also hybrids that cross the boundaries in daring and imaginative ways. At the heart of good writing, whatever the genre, is the art of imagination, scene construction, and writing creatively about place, character and interior lives. This dynamic workshop will involve discussion, feedback, question sessions and writing exercises, according to need.
