Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane, or online.


Faber Writing Scholarship for Novel Writing

For aspiring novelists ready to jump into our Writing a Novel course. The scholarship provides a free place in this three month flagship program designed to have graduates develop a substantial body of new writing, heading towards a first draft of a novel.


Faber Writing Scholarship for a First Nations Novelist

This new scholarship is for a First Nations writer working on a novel manuscript, to secure a free place in our Writing a Novel program.

For the purposes of application a person will be considered to be a First Nations writer where they are of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, identify as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and they are accepted as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander in the community in which they live or have lived.


Faber Writing Scholarship for a Writer working on an Ecologically-themed Novel

This new scholarship is offered to encourage writers who are exploring the natural world, challenges to biodiversity, sustainability, climate change and our future environment. Entrants must be writing fiction aimed at adult readers. The winner of this scholarship will also receive three hours worth of one-on-one mentorship with a leading writer who has published a work of fiction or non-fiction pertaining to ecological concern.


General Information

All scholarships allow the recipients to complete a Faber Writing Academy course for free. Our industry-based courses are offered inside Australia’s leading independent publishing company and give students the opportunity to build a trusted writing group and make valuable industry connections.

The deadline for all 2021 scholarship applications is 25 September 2020. Winners will be advised by November 2020.

In order to apply, you will need to submit in a single document:

• A short one page statement explaining the novel you are writing and why, as a writer, a Faber Writing Scholarship will help you
• A 1000 word sample of your novel

Terms and Conditions of all Scholarships

• The scholarships must be undertaken in 2021 and cannot be transferred to another year or a different Faber Writing Academy at Allen & Unwin course.

• The winners agree to commit to the entire duration of the course and will endeavour to attend each of the course sessions.

• At the completion of the course, the winner agrees to write a piece about their experience of doing the course which can be used by Faber Writing Academy for promotional purposes.

• Faber Writing Academy at Allen & Unwin reserves the right to withdraw or not award a scholarship at any time.

• In the event that the course is cancelled, Faber Writing Academy cannot offer compensation or a transfer of the scholarship to any other Faber Writing Academy courses.

• The scholarships cover the tuition fee only except where stated.

• The decision of the judging committee is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
